چکیده

The harsh operating environment of the automotive application makes the semi-permanent connector susceptible to intermittent high contact resistance which eventually leads to failure. Fretting corrosion is often the cause of these failures. However, laboratory testing of sample contact materials produce results that do not correlate with commercially tested connectors. A multicontact (M-C) reliability model is developed to bring together the fundamental studies and studies conducted on commercially available connector terminals. It is based on fundamental studies of the single contact interfaces and applied to commercial multicontact terminals. The model takes into consideration firstly, that a single contact interface may recover to low contact resistance after attaining a high value and secondly, that a terminal consists of more than one contact interface. For the connector to fail, all contact interfaces have to be in the failed state at the same time.

Degradation of Road Tested Automotive Connectors

The automotive environment is particularly demanding on connector performance, and is characterized by large temperature changes, high humidity and corrosive atmospheres. This paper presents an initial study of connector performance in terms of temperature profiles taken from road vehicles. The temperature profiles are then simulated using empirical relationships to allow prediction of connecto...

Fretting Corrosion in Electric Contacts

Fretting corrosion is a form of accelerated atmospheric oxidation which occurs at the interface of contacting materials undergoing slight, cyclic relative motion. In electric contacts involving non-noble metals, fretting action can cause rapid increases in contact resistance, proceeding to virtual open circuits in a matter of minutes in the worst cases. Experimental results of resistance increa...

Fretting corrosion of tin-plated contacts

The susceptibility of tin-plated contacts to fretting corrosion is a major limitation for its use in electrical connectors. The present paper evaluates the influence of a variety of factors, such as, fretting amplitude (track length), frequency, temperature, humidity, normal load and current load on the fretting corrosion behaviour of tin-plated contacts. This paper also addresses the developme...

The Effect of Surface Roughness on the Fretting Corrosion of 316l Stainless Steel Biomaterial Surfaces

The medical device industry is still seeking answers to the mechanically-assisted corrosion (MAC) problem, which becomes increasingly important due to modularity in design. MAC manifests in various forms, some of which are fretting corrosion, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion. Several studies have been conducted to understand the causes and the factors that affect fretting corrosion. Some ...
